NFL star Tyreek Hill was detained and handcuffed by police on a road near his team's stadium just hours before the season opener.

Just hours before his season opener, Tyreek Hill was detained for a traffic incident just a block from the Miami Dolphins' stadium. Footage from the morning of Sunday, Sept. 8, shows the Dolphins wide receiver lying face-down and handcuffed by four police officers near his vehicle. The Dolphins later confirmed on social media that the incident happened near Rock Stadium, where Hill and the team are set to play the Jacksonville Jaguars at 1 p.m. local time.

“This morning, WR Tyreek Hill was pulled over for a traffic incident about a block from the stadium and briefly detained by police,” the Dolphins stated on X (formerly Twitter). The statement added that Hill “has since been released” and noted that other Dolphins players witnessed the detainment. “Several teammates saw the incident and stopped to offer support,” the statement continued. “Tyreek and all other players involved have safely arrived at the stadium and will be available for today’s game.”

Hill’s agent, Drew Rosenhaus, confirmed that Hill is still set to play against the Jaguars. ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported that Rosenhaus had just seen Hill, who was “getting ready to play today.” Rosenhaus described the detainment as “mind-boggling” and “completely unnecessary,” adding that he is “very distraught” and plans to investigate further. Neither Rosenhaus nor the Miami Dade Police Department immediately responded to PEOPLE’s requests for comment.
